Photography, more than any other artistic media, requires the use of the highest quality equipment and materials available. An image can be lost by a compromise on the lens, film, printing equipment or materials used.

Since 1978 I have relied exclusively on Leica, the finest equipment available. Camera bodies, lenses, motor drivers, filters, and darkroom equipment all carry the Leica logo

Much controvery surrounds the advent and development of digital imaging. As a purist, I am a strong advocate of film. Ansel Adams noted that there are over fifty different black and white films available. Adding color negative and transparency films brings the total to over 100. Some characteristics may be shared from film to film, however each maintains its own unique qualities. Consider the variety of developing chemistries, the assortment of printing paper & their chemistries and the variations seem limitless.

All of my color images are taken on transparency film and printed with the Ilfachrome process utilizing contrast masking. There is no other photographic media, digital or film that can match it for its' contrast, color saturation, detail definition and depth.

For black and white images I use Ilford films. Since most of my work in this media becomes hand colored, I print on various fiber-based papers in order to obtain the desired effect. Other than the use of a circular polarizer or UV filter, my photos are taken without any manipulation. Contrast masking, dodging & burning are the only manipulative processes employed in the darkroom.

All of my photographs are taken in their natural setting and portray normally occuring events. The wildlife images are of free roaming animals in their natural habitat. Working with wildlife biologists on many of my projects I have learned and adhere to non-invasive techniques for approaching animals in the wild.
