Wild Horses

Currently my efforts are centered in activities to preserve and protect wild horses. This involves conducting wild horse photography workshops, producing images for upcoming books, and seeking private and public funding for various related projects.

Wild horses were extinct from all of the Americas and Mexico for eight to ten thousand years prior to Columbus' second voyage in 1493. It was not until 1529 that horses were re-introduced to the present day United States when Don Juan Inatie established a permanent settlement in what is now Castillo, New Mexico.

Through DNA testing literally hundreds of today's Mustangs have been traced with 67% to 88% match to the original horses brought here by Columbus. This alone is substantial reason to acknowledge there animals as a National treasure and to protect them as a significant contributor to our national heritage.

Orca Wales

Additionally, I am working with noted animal behavioral psychologist Dr. Robert Otis, of the Whale Research Lab. Bob has spent summers for the past fourteen years studying killer whale behavior. Utilizing the close proximity of Orca pods J, K and L, his research is centered on San Juan Island, Washington. In addition to documenting Bob's research parameters, I am also fortunate enough to get some wonderful photos of Orcas.

Future projects include two photo documentaries. The first is about persons with developmental disabilities as they compete in Special Olympics, and another portraying Native Americans in their dual lives (one living day to day in mainstream society, and the other in pursuit of their spiritual progress, in their native tradition).

Workshops

Finally, I am teaching Marine Mammal photography workshops on San Juan Island Washington, Winter Wildlife photography in Yellowstone National Park, and Wild Horse photography in various locales throughout the country. Many of these classes are offered in conjunction with and sponsored through Santa Fe workshops.
