Learn and Have Fun
Designed for photographers who want to improve their photographic skills and learn more about the northwest's fabulous wildlife, our workshops are led by internationally known wildlife photographer Don Whittecar and wildlife artist and educator Dr. Sally Hodson. Receive personal instruction that can improve your techniques in composition, exposure, and lighting all while building a portfolio of great wildlife photos. Develop an artists' eye as you compose images that capture the beauty and personality of each animal and bird.
Blending a great mix of demonstration, hands-on practice and field experience, our workshops offer you adventure, fun and an opportunity to visit San Juan Islans' most magnificent wildlife viewing locations. We'll take boat trips to see whales, porpoises, seals and marine birds... photograph the resident Orca pods passing close to shore from the rocy cliffs of Whale Watch Park... watch stunning sunsets that seem to dance across the water and last forever.
Meet the Local Wildlife
In order to take great wildlife photographs, it is essential to know the behavior and habitat of each subject. You will learn how, when and where to find different species and develop a different way of "seeing". As wildlife photographers, we feel a great responsibility to ensure that we cause no harm to the wildlife we photograph. You will learn to take your photos in a manner that respects and avoids disturbing animals. We will show you how to use sensitive wildlife watching and photography etiquette that can actually increase your chances of seeing wildlife while protecting both the watched and the watchers from harm.
Some of the best memories of your workshop experience will be spending time with others who share your passion for wildlife photography!
We Walk Our Talk...
As part of our commitment to wildlife, a portion of the revenues generated from our workshops are donated to nonprofit wildlife organizations who are working to preserve local wildlife species and their habitat. You will see first hand the efforts of The Whale Museum and Wolf Hollow Rehabilitation Center.
